Starting out on a first job is tough

Remember finding the right job is NOT what it’s all about. There is more to life than pursuing a chosen career. Work is a means to an end not an end in itself.

Most times starting out on your first job is tough.

It’s starting at the first square, right from the bottom.

I have put down some thoughts to share with a young friend from my experience gleaned over the years.

I have learnt most of these life lessons through the school of hard knocks so it is tried and tested:

  • Remember finding the right job is NOT what it’s all about. There is more to life than pursuing a chosen career. Work is a means to an end not an end in itself.

  • Live life to its fullest and don’t get dragged down by racing with the rats.
  • Stop and think what was the best things you have done in the last year that made you feel alive. Pursue that NOT a career or job per say.
  • Life is NOT fair. Hang in there and take the twists and turns in your stride. The good guys or gals don’t always get the breaks they deserve. It will be hard starting out so give yourself time and don’t blame yourself when things don’t go according to plan. They usually don’t.
  • Don’t compare your status in life with others.
  • Life is a marathon, not the 100m sprint so pace yourself. Stop and replenish your energy.
  • Always keep learning. Invest in yourself. Your are the greatest asset you own.
  • Don’t stop moving forward there maybe something better waiting for you around the bend.
  • Take a job to gain the experience and later decide what you want to do. Stay or move on to a bigger company.
  • Take one day at a time, slowly settle into your new station in life as working adult.
  • What you will discover is that happiness is not tied up with work or a career. I am not saying you can’t love what you do and be passionate and committed to it but what I have discovered is that there is more to life than work.
  • Pursue other interests that you enjoy such as music, sport, reading, travel, etc. and you will do well.

Find your element and you will never have to work again

All the best and go with God!

Finding the right job is NOT what it’s all about. There is more to life than work.

“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” – Mark Twain
