3 practical insights to help you stop wasting time

To live fully, we must learn to use things and love people, and not love things and use people. ― John Powell

Are you are in a constant rush, one activity to another? Multitasking trying hard to juggle competing priorities? Feel you don’t have the time to stop and take a break?

This “superman complex” is a common symptom of life in the fast lane. I confess it’s easy to be sucked into this world and become part of the mob.

Every now and then something happens to me and I am stopped in my tracks and forced to remind myself that, life is a gift.

It’s temporary, fragile and can be taken away in a blink of an eye. We don’t own it but are merely gifted with time on earth. We are however responsible to spend it wisely.

Here are three points that have helped me find balance:

  1. Time is finite so begin with the end in mind. Oftentimes we are conditioned to believe that we will live forever and so get caught up with the accumulation of things. Stephen Covey’s – Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is a fantastic read. Read Habit 2. Begin with the end in mind. Love people and use things NOT use people and love things.
  2. Manage your energy not your time by Tony Schwartz. This is a great article and you can read it free if you register on the HBR website. Also, check out his website The Energy Project for some interesting insights.
  3. Life is short so prioritise. We all have only 24 hours a day so you need to prioritise and put first things first. Step back and look at the big picture. Things we stress about today may not even be worth the effort in the long run so focus on the essentials. When all is said and done and its time for you to leave this earth will you haves any regrets?.

It will be too late then so take the time to play and enjoy the moment because that’s all you really have.
