Searching for a God beyond names

Words point us to something beyond themselves. When we confuse the word for the reality it points to we make it into mental idol. We must abandon our ideas of god if we want to find God.

The highest ideal that a person holds is their God – C.G. Jung

My very first blog article in 2010 was about whether a religious group could own the copyright on the name of the Divine one.

That may seem like an idiotic debate but unfortunately throughout human existence this has been a question of life and death. It sadly remains so in many countries around the world today.

So how do you address the Omnipotent one?

My own thoughts on this matter have changed radically in the last 10 years. The problem I believe is we have stopped short in our quest for the Creator and become content to bow down and worship mental idols [or ideas, words or teachings] made by human hands.

A word points to something beyond itself. The word, ‘orange’ cannot convey the experience of what an orange is. It simply a sign that points to the reality.

You have to taste an orange to know what it is. I cannot tell you or share that experience with you.

We commit idolatry when we substitute a word or teaching for the Creator.

In short, we decide to worship the finger pointing to the moon rather than the moon. And eat the menu rather than the meal sitting in front of us as both Bruce Lee and Alan Watts have pointed out.

One only needs to look around to see the fiery debates that takes place when arguing on the right words of use to refer to that which is beyond all words.

Listening and doing must go hand in hand

Abandon god to know God

Meister Eckhart says that we must abandon our ideas of god if we want to know God. I now see what he means.
The names, ideas and concepts we give God end up putting the Divine in a BOX.

And make our [idea of god] into a mental idol. Small enough for us to control and manipulate. My God is right and yours is wrong.
A private god at our beck and call, ready to respond to our every command.

We must go beyond the altar where no walls or names exist. The Divine is not apart from us.
God is everywhere and in everything.
Encompassing and surrounding us.
He is in all and fills everything.
Closer to us us than we are to ourselves.

Part of a poem by a Muslim mystic Rabia of Basra

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
